Dedicated to the police officers who gave their lives unselfishly in the performance of their duties.
While the majority of the officers listed below died In the Line of Duty, some were killed providing security for the citizens of Memphis.
The circumstances surrounding the deaths of these officers are unknown at this time:

Patrolman Tucker died of stab wounds when he attempted to arrest a wanted fugitive.

Patrolman John W. Causey | December 31,1861
Patrolman Causey was stabbed to death by a man he was attempting to arrest off duty.

Sergeant W.C. Stockham | February 22, 1865
Sergeant W.C. Stockham was shot and killed by a suspect he was attempting to arrest a disorderly suspect near the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Third Street.

Patrolman William Mower | March 1, 1866
Patrolman William Mower died of wounds he received nine days earlier when he was shot by a Union Army solder.

Patrolman John Stevens | May 1, 1866
Died on May 1, 1866 after being shot in the thigh by a group of rioters at Third and Calhoun. -
Patrolman John M. Claridge | April 24, 1867
Patrolman Claridge succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained the previous day while responding to a large disturbance at a saloon near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Main Street.

Patrolman Walter M. Rodgers | June 4, 1867
Patrolman Walter Rogers was shot and killed when he tried to arrest a suspect that was holding two men at gunpoint near the intersection of Market Street and Main Street.

Patrolman John M. Fenton | December 31, 1867
Patrolman John Fenton succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained a week earlier when he attempted to remove three intoxicated men who were causing a disturbance from a saloon. -
Patrolman John Gear | March 13, 1868
Patrolman John Gear was shot and wounded when he and his partner attempted to stop three men acting suspiciously near the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and 4th Street.

Captain Somers Perry | June 12, 1868
Captain James Somers Perry was shot and wounded while investigating a burglary in progress near the corner of Monroe and Main Streets. -
Sergeant D. J. Finch | March 8, 1869
Sergeant Darwin Finch was shot and killed when he and two other officers went to arrest a suspect on a warrant at Horn Lake, Mississippi. -
Patrolman John Regan | July 13, 1870
Patrolman Regan died of sunstroke after walking his beat for six hours.

Patrolman Rufus Chalmers Parkinson | November 2, 1894
Patrolman Rufus Parkinson was shot and killed as he attempted to arrest a suspect wanted for robbing a woman in Osceola, Arkansas. -
Detective Joseph A. Perkins | July 17, 1900
Detective Joseph A. Perkins was shot during an arrest of a murder suspect.

Patrolman Robert C. Jameson | October 17, 1904
Patrolman Jameson was shot and killed after responding to assist another officer in arresting an armed suspect.

Patrolman W. Edwin Miller drowned while pursuing an escaped prisoner.

Patrolman John Taylor was shot and killed when he and three other officers went to a home at 124 Illinois Avenue in Memphis to arrest four men who had held up a street car.

Shot December 30, 1929 at 512 Saint Martin apprehending an armed person. -

Struck by a Fire Truck October 22, 1931 while directing traffic at Second Street and Union Avenue during a fire. -
Patrolman Roy A. Scott | February 20, 1936
Shot February 20, 1936 at 1409 Britton while arresting a robber. -
Patrolman George W. Ham | February 27, 1936
Accident at Walnut and Linden on February 27, 1936 while involved in a chase, struck by another car going through the intersection. -
Patrolman C.C. Musick | July 2, 1937
While riding his police motorcycle to work on July 2, 1937 he was struck by a DWI car at Poplar and Tillman. -
Patrolman John Cannon | June 30, 1939
Patrolman Cannon died of injuries he received when a prisoner assaulted him nineteen months earlier. -
Patrolman James E. Walker | April 12, 1952
Killed April 12, 1952 when his motorcycle skidded on wet pavement and struck a tree on Parkway at Avalon. -

Was struck by a City bus November 30, 1959 while directing traffic in front of Bellevue School. -
Officer Frank Bruno, Jr. | October 7, 1960
Shot October 7, 1960 while investigating a burglary at 639 East McLemore.

Killed in an automobile accident November 20, 1963 at Northwood Drive and Walnut Grove Road. -
Officer James E. Harper, Jr. | February 12, 1964
Killed in an accident February 12, 1964 when a car turned in front of him while chasing a speeder on Bellevue near Ledger. -
Officer Dennis J. Jobe | September 22, 1970
Killed September 22, 1970 in a motorcycle accident at Armour Station. -
Officer Michael D. Wright, Jr. | September 9, 1972
Killed September 9, 1972 in an automobile accident at Thomas and Watkins.

Shot May 21, 1973 while attempting to arrest a man who had killed four people and wounded four others at Kansas and Ingle Streets. -
Officer Edward J. Hammond, Jr. | November 23, 1973
Shot November 23, 1973 at Chelsea and McNeil while attempting to arrest an armed person. -
Officer McCord L. Springfield | March 12, 1977
Shot March 12, 1977 at 1244 College while apprehending an armed person. -
Officer James N. Bush, Jr. | December 29, 1978
Struck by a car December 29, 1978 while directing traffic on South Third Street at Mitchell Road.

Lieutenant Clarence P. Cox | May 12, 1981
Shot May 12, 1981 in front of the Lauderdale Court Apartments while checking a suspicious person. -
Lieutenant Ronald D. Oliver | August 5, 1981
Shot August 5, 1981 in a holdup at Wendy’s at 3275 North Danny Thomas.

Shot January 14, 1982 during the robbery of the residence at 5600 Shady Grove Road. -
Officer Charles L. Harrison | May 6, 1982
Killed May 6, 1982 when his motorcycle struck a car on Interstate 240 East of Airways. -
Police Trainee J.W. Sykes, Jr. | December 31, 1982
Shot December 31, 1982 by armed robbers as he approached their car. -
Officer Robert S. Hester | January 12, 1983
Beaten to death January 12, 1983 after being held hostage by a religious group at 2239 Shannon Street. -
Police Service Technician Booker T. Shaw, Jr. | December 17, 1985
Was struck by a tractor trailer December 17, 1985 while investigating an accident on Interstate 240 east of Millbranch. -
Officer John E. Reeve | September 9, 1991
Killed September 9, 1991 after he lost control of his squad car on slippery streets in route to an alarm call and hit a telephone pole. -
Major Rufus Gates | November 7, 1994
Was shot November 7, 1994 by a Uniform Police Officer who didn’t recognize him as being an Undercover Police Officer. -
Officer Dannael J. Weekes | March 7, 1997
Died Friday, March 7, 1997 from injuries sustained after the vehicle he was riding in struck another vehicle while in route to an Off-duty Police Officer Calling for Help Call. -
Officer Don Williams | January 22, 1998
Died January 22, 1998 from injuries received when he was shot in the back of the head at point blank range while working an off-duty security job on December 26, 1997.

Officer Don Overton | October 12, 1999
Died October 14, 1999 after his squad car was broadsided on Hollywood in North Memphis by a car occupied by four theft suspects fleeing police. -
Officer John Robinson | December 1, 1999
Died December 1, 1999 shortly after his cruiser crashed into several trees while attempting to apprehend two robbery suspects on New Allen Road.

Died November 14, 2000 from a gunshot wound he received while responding to an off-duty incident. -
Officer Anthony L. Woods | August 27, 2003
Died August 27, 2003 from gunshot wounds he received while responding to a domestic disturbance call in an apartment complex in the Parkway Village area of Memphis. -
Officer Marlon Titus | March 30, 2004
Died on March 30, 2004 at approximately 0145 hours after he was involved in a on-duty vehicle crash. -
Officer Timothy Warren | July 3, 2011
Died on July 3, 2011 from gunshot wounds he received while responding to a domestic disturbance call at a downtown hotel. -
Officer Martoiya Lang | December 14, 2012
Died on December 14, 2012 from gunshot wounds she received while executing a search warrant. -
Officer Sean Bolton | August 1, 2015.
Died on August 1, 2015. Police Officer II Sean Bolton was shot and killed when he interrupted a drug deal near the intersection of Cottonwood and Perkins Roads. -
Sergeant Verdell Smith | June 4, 2016
Died on June 4, 2016. Sergeant Verdell Smith was struck and killed by a vehicle whose driver had been involved in a triple shooting approximately 30 minutes earlier.

Officer Bobby Montgomery | August 16, 2020
Officer Bobby Montgomery died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 while on duty.
Beginning in early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to the requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19 and continue to do so as the virus spreads across the United States.
Officer Montgomery served with the Memphis Police Department for 17 years and was assigned to the Tillman Station Precinct.

Officer Scotty Triplett | May 22, 2021
Police Officer Scotty Triplett was killed in a motorcycle crash while he and other officers performed an escort along Hickory Hill Road at about 4:45 pm.
He was traveling northbound when an oncoming car disregarded his emergency equipment and turned left in front of him at the intersection with Swaying Pine Lane, causing a collision. Officer Triplett was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Officer Triplett had served with the Memphis Police Department for 27 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Officer Jimmie "Alex" Shindler | September 20, 2021
Officer Jimmie Shindler died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 while on duty.
Beginning in early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to the requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19 and continue to do so as the virus spreads across the United States.
Officer Shindler served with the Memphis Police Department for 12 years and was assigned to the Mt. Moriah Station Precinct.
He is survived by his wife and two children.

Officer Darrell Adams | October 2, 2021
Police Officer Darrell Adams was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on I-40 near North Watkins Street while he and other officers were investigating a vehicle accident at 11:00 am.
Officer Adams served with the Memphis Police Department for 5-1/2 years.
He is survived by his wife.

Lt. Michael Lewis Hill | November 4, 2021
Lieutenant Michael Hill died as a result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.
Beginning in early 2020, thousands of law enforcement officers and other first responders throughout the country contracted COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic due to the requirements of their job. Many of these first responders died as a result of COVID-19 and continue to do so as the virus spreads across the United States.
Lieutenant Hill had served with the Memphis Police Department for 33 years.

Officer Corille Jones | January 20, 2022
Police Officer Corille Jones was killed in a traffic crash when his patrol vehicle was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of Shelby Drive and Pleasant Hill Road at 2:33 am. Officer Jones and his partner were responding to a call to assist a homeless citizen seeking shelter. Officer Jones was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Officer Jones served with the Memphis Police Department for 2 years.
He is survived by his two daughters and his mother.

Officer Geoffrey Redd | February 18, 2023
Memphis Police Officer Geoffrey Redd succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained two weeks earlier while responding to a suspicious person call at the Poplar-White Station Library at 5094 Poplar Avenue.
Officers, including Officer Redd, had responded to a nearby business regarding a trespasser. Approximately 30 minutes later the subject became engaged in an altercation with a citizen inside of the Poplar-White Station Library. As Officer Redd and another officer attempted to contact the subject outside of the library, the man produced a handgun and opened fire on them.
Officer Redd was shot and critically wounded before the other officer returned fire killing the subject. Officer Redd was transported to Regional One Hospital and remained in critical condition until succumbing to his wounds on February 18th, 2023.
Several years prior to being shot, Officer Redd had been critically injured when he was struck by a vehicle while on duty. He returned to duty following an extensive recovery period.
Officer Redd had served with the Memphis Police Department for 15 years. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and four grandchildren.
